Disease Control Challenge

Protecting cereal crops from yield-robbing diseases
Cereal growers are constantly faced with the threat of fusarium head blight and rusts – two of the most yield damaging diseases to cereal crops. Half of spring wheat and two thirds of durum sampled in 2016 contained fusarium damage and rusts are growing in prevalence with stripe (yellow) rust able to successfully overwinter in Western Canada. These diseases can both have a devastating impact on wheat yield and quality.

Nufarm Solution

New proprietary fungicide provides more protection options
Hornet™ fungicide delivers another option to help growers defend their cereal crops against damages from fusarium head blight and rusts. Hornet (Group 3) is a proprietary brand of tebuconazole in a liquid formation, similar to Folicur® 432, giving Canadian farmers access to more tools to protect their cereal crops from two serious diseases.

Benefits

  • New alternative tebuconazole foliar fungicide
  • Fusarium head blight protection in cereal crops
  • World’s Leading rust control

PLUS

  • Control of stripe rust which is a growing issue for Canadian farmers
especially as it has now been found to overwinter in some of our geographies
  • One solution + many different timings and diseases. Hornet can be used
from 4-leaf to flowering depending on the disease targeted.
  • Crown and stem rust control in oats
  • Coverage, coverage, coverage
  • Timing is critical to apply Hornet PRIOR to onset of disease

  • Active Ingredient: Group 3 (tebuconazole)
  • Treatment Area: Once case treats:
    • 160 acres for fusarium
      head blight
    • 210 acres for leaf diseases
  • Application:
    • 119 mL/ac. for fusarium
      head blight from 75% head
      emergence to 50% flower
    • 89 mL/ac. for leaf diseases
      from the 4-leaf to early
      flag leaf
      NOTES
  • Notes:
    • One case treats 160 acres
      (at 119 mL/ac. rate) at
      fusarium timing
    • One case treats 210 acres
      (at 89 mL/ac. rate) at
      rust timing

Registered crops

  • Barley
  • Oats
  • Wheat (spring, durum, winter)

Performance Tips

  • Apply prior to disease development when heat and humidity are conducive
    to infections

For fusarium head blight

  • Optimum coverage of the head is required
  • Recommended use of a non-ionic surfactant such as Carrier when sprayedalone for best results
  • Apply from the time 75% of the main heads have emerged up to 50%flowering of the main heads

For leaf disease

  • Apply at the first signs of disease development
  • Best yield results when the flag leaf is protected
